Raw or Roasted?

When it comes to feeding pumpkin seeds to squirrels, the form in which they are offered is important.

  • Raw Seeds: Raw pumpkin seeds are the best choice for squirrels. They are safe and healthy, and squirrels enjoy the natural taste.
  • Roasted Seeds: It’s advisable to avoid offering roasted pumpkin seeds to squirrels if they are salted or seasoned. The added salt and seasonings commonly found in roasted seeds can be harmful to squirrels.

Can You Feed Pumpkin Seeds from a Pumpkin to Squirrels?

You can take the seeds out of a pumpkin and serve them to squirrels. Here are some steps and tips to do this safely and effectively:

Harvest the Seeds: Cut open the pumpkin and scoop out the seeds. You can separate the seeds from the stringy pumpkin flesh, but don’t worry about cleaning them meticulously; a bit of pumpkin flesh won’t harm the squirrels.

Rinse: It’s a good idea to rinse the seeds to remove any excess pumpkin pulp. This step is more about keeping your feeding area clean than it is about squirrel dietary needs.

Dry the Seeds: Spread the seeds out on a paper towel or clean cloth and let them dry. This helps to prevent mold growth, which can be harmful to squirrels.

Serve Them Raw: Serve the pumpkin seeds to the squirrels in their raw, unroasted form. Avoid adding any salt, oil, or seasoning, as these can be harmful to squirrels.

While pumpkin seeds can be a healthy snack for squirrels, as with any treat, pumpkin seeds should be given to squirrels in moderation. They should not replace the squirrel’s regular diet of nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables.
