Can Squirrels Eat Raisins?

Sharing is caring!

Watching the squirrels in our bird feeder areas, we all know that squirrels have a varied diet. If you’re looking for different foods to feed the squirrels, whether because you’re considering your own leftovers or you are looking to add diversity to their diet (or lure them away from the bird feeder so the birds can eat), you may be wondering if squirrels can eat raisins. The answer is yes–but there are some forms of raisins you should NOT give squirrels.

Raisins and Squirrels: A General Overview

Raisins, which are simply dried grapes, can be a part of a squirrel’s diet. However, there are several considerations to keep in mind.

Natural raisins are usually sun-dried and do not contain added sugars or preservatives, making them a safer choice for squirrels. However, raisins are high in sugar. While a little bit of sugar won’t harm the squirrel, excessive amounts can lead to health problems. Therefore, raisins should only be offered sparingly.

Raisins You Can NOT Give Squirrels

It is imperative to avoid chocolate covered raisins as chocolate is toxic to squirrels and most animals.

Also, it’s not advisable to feed squirrels yogurt-covered raisins. While squirrels can technically eat them, yogurt-covered raisins are high in added sugars. Also, many animals, squirrels included, are lactose intolerant and can have difficulty digesting dairy products, leading to gastrointestinal upset.

Can Squirrels Eat Sultanas?

Squirrels can eat sultanas, which are essentially just a type of raisin made from white seedless grapes. Sultanas are dried grapes, similar to raisins and currants, and they are generally sweeter and lighter in color compared to regular raisins.

Sultanas, like raisins, are high in sugar. While squirrels can eat and digest these fruits, they should only be given in moderation as part of a varied diet. Feeding them too many sultanas can lead to health issues due to the high sugar content.

Feeding Squirrels: A Balanced Approach

A healthy diet for squirrels includes a variety of nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables. While they might enjoy the occasional raisin, their diet should primarily consist of their natural foods, nuts and seeds.

In conclusion, while squirrels can have raisins as an occasional treat, responsible feeding practices are essential. A focus on their natural diet and habitat preservation is key to keeping our furry visitors healthy and happy.
