World Sparrow Day: when it is, how to celebrate it

When is World Sparrow Day Celebrated?

World Sparrow Day is celebrated every year on March 20.

A Brief History of World Sparrow Day

World Sparrow Day was first organized by India’s Nature Forever Society (NFS) with the assistance of France’s Eco-Sys Action Foundation in 2010.

This bird awareness day was created as a way to highlight the decline of sparrow populations in many parts of the world, particularly India.

According to World Sparrow Day, “The house sparrow also represents many of the common bird species and is, in a sense, their ambassador. Therefore, the conservation of the house sparrow and its habitat will also help save much of the common biodiversity, which shares the habitat of the house sparrows.”

Since its inception, World Sparrow Day has been celebrated on March 20th each year with events around the world as well as special awards recognizing environmental conservation.

“The Wipro – Nature Forever Society Sparrow Awards are aimed at highlighting the conservation efforts of individuals and organisations working in their own capacity on issues related to all aspects of the environment. The work can feature a wide spectrum of issues ranging from awareness to resource or species conservation to advocacy or green technology and is not restricted only to Sparrow conservation as the Name of the award says.”

How to Celebrate World Sparrow Day

The best way to celebrate World Sparrow Day is by taking action to help these birds.

One of the biggest threats to sparrow populations is loss of habitat, so consider planting native trees and shrubs in your yard or community garden. You can also put up a birdhouse or two; tree cavities are perfect homes for nesting sparrows.

Also, be sure to keep your cat indoors—birds of all kinds, including sparrows, are killed each year by outdoor cats.

Finally, fill your bird feeder with seeds that sparrows love, such as sunflower seeds and millet, and sit back and enjoy watching these busy little birds at work!

On World Sparrow Day, take a moment to think about one of the most common birds in the world: the humble sparrow. This holiday is a chance for us to learn more about these fascinating birds and take action to help them thrive!
