Birds at a Backyard Feeder That Might Eat Mango

Several types of birds are likely to enjoy mango at a backyard feeder, especially those that naturally eat fruit. These include:

  • Orioles: Known for their love of fruits, orioles will readily eat mango.
  • Parrots: Many domesticated and wild parrot species enjoy a variety of fruits, including mango.
  • Tanagers: These birds have a diet that includes a high portion of fruit.
  • Mockingbirds and Thrashers: Often attracted to fruit, they might sample mango if it’s available.
  • Cardinals and Grosbeaks: These birds, while primarily seed-eaters, are also known to eat fruits occasionally.

How to Serve Mango to Birds

To safely and effectively offer mango to birds, follow these steps:

  • Wash the Mango: Ensure the mango is thoroughly washed to remove any pesticide residue.
  • Cut into Small Pieces: Slice the mango into small, manageable pieces or chunks that birds can easily eat.
  • Remove the Pit: The large pit should be removed and discarded as it can pose a choking hazard.
  • Place on a Feeder: Put the mango pieces on a fruit feeder or a platform feeder where birds can easily access them.

Precautions When Feeding Mango to Birds

Avoid Processed Mango: Do not feed birds canned mango or mango in syrup, as these can contain added sugars and preservatives.

Monitor Freshness: Like all fresh fruits, mango can spoil. Remove any uneaten mango to prevent attracting pests and to maintain hygiene at the feeder. When I serve fruits at our feeders, I put them out in the morning then discard any uneaten portions by evening to avoid night visitors like raccoons, mice, opossums and foxes.

Serve in Moderation: While mango is healthy, it should only be part of a varied diet for birds, not the sole food source.

Mango can be a delightful treat for many birds, offering both taste and nutrition. By properly preparing and serving mango, you can attract a variety of fruit-loving birds to your backyard and provide them with a beneficial dietary supplement.
